Saints of 12 May
Saints Nereus, Achilleus, Domitilla and Pancras
On 12 May, the Church honours four early Christian martyrs whose courage and faith continue to inspire Christians throughout the world: Saints Nereus, Achilleus, Domitilla, and Pancras. Though they lived during times of persecution in the Roman Empire, they remained faithful to Christ even unto death.
Saints Nereus and Achilleus
Their conversion came through the witness of Saint Domitilla, with whom they were closely associated. After embracing Christianity, they courageously confessed their faith and suffered martyrdom during the persecutions of the Roman Empire.
Their tombs were discovered in the Catacomb of Domitilla in Rome, where Christians have honoured them since the earliest centuries of the Church.
What We Can Learn from Them
- True courage comes from fidelity to Christ.
- Christians are called to reject violence and injustice.
- Faith sometimes requires sacrifice and perseverance.
Saint Domitilla
Because of her faith and her refusal to marry a pagan husband, she was exiled and suffered persecution. Ancient traditions remember her as a woman of remarkable purity, courage, and devotion.
The Catacomb of Domitilla in Rome bears her name and remains one of the oldest and most important Christian burial sites in the city.
What We Can Learn from Her
- Holiness is possible in every walk of life.
- Christian witness often requires standing apart from worldly pressures.
- Purity and faithfulness are precious gifts to God.
Saint Pancras
During the persecution under Emperor Diocletian, Pancras was arrested and ordered to renounce his faith. Though only about fourteen years old, he boldly refused. He was sentenced to death and became a martyr around the year AD 304.
Because of his youthful faith and steadfast courage, Saint Pancras became a beloved saint throughout Christian Europe. He is often invoked as a patron of young people and of truthfulness.
What We Can Learn from Him
- Young people can be powerful witnesses to Christ.
- Faith is worth defending at every age.
- God gives strength even in times of fear and suffering.
